GitPython before 3.1.59 reportedly corrupts dormant multi-line git-config values into injected directives, enabling arbitrary code execution.

What happened

GitPython before 3.1.59 appears to fail to safely re-serialize multi-line git-config values during write operations. This corruption can turn dormant quoted values into live git directives like core.hooksPath. Attackers can craft config files with embedded newlines that become active git directives after any unrelated GitPython config write, potentially enabling arbitrary code execution via hook invocation. The vulnerability is under investigation and has not yet been exploited in the wild.

The affected versions include all versions before 3.1.51 or any version between 0.1.7 and 3.1.58 inclusive. Users of these versions should consider themselves potentially vulnerable. The issue is tracked under GHSA-9557-234j-7rv9 and GHSA-284h-m62q-gf8w.
