An early warning has been issued regarding a potential vulnerability in Steeltoe's certificate-based authorization mechanism. This vulnerability, if exploited, could allow unauthorized access to protected endpoints.

What happened

Steeltoe's certificate-based authorization is reportedly configured to rely on the `X-Client-Cert` HTTP header to identify the client certificate, without verifying private-key possession. This configuration appears to allow an attacker to spoof the `X-Client-Cert` header and bypass authorization policies, granting unauthorized access to protected endpoints. The vulnerability is currently under investigation and no exploitation in the wild has been confirmed.

The affected component is the Steeltoe NuGet package. However, no authoritative version range has been published yet. It is recommended to monitor the primary sources for updates on affected versions and any available patches.
